A forty-six-year veteran of the department, John M. Carroll taught courses on U.S. military history, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and sport in America. He authored Red Grange and the Rise of Modern Football (University of Illinois Press, 1999) and Fritz Pollard: Pioneer in Racial Advancement (University of Illinois Press, 1992) and edited eight other books in the fields of U.S. military, diplomatic, and sport history. He published more than fifty articles printed in scholarly journals, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. Among the many honors received over the course of his career, he was named Regents Professor and Distinguished Faculty Lecturer.
