ADVISING: English, Modern Language and Philosophy faculty members are available to advise junior and senior majors and answer your inquiries. The Undergraduate Advising Center will advise freshman and sophomore majors.

LANGUAGE LAB: A contemporary language laboratory is available if you are studying a foreign language. For information contact Dr. Jaime Retamles

PULSE MAGAZINE: This student publication showcases the best creative writing of LamarUniversity students. For information call the Pulse office (880-8558) or Gretchen Johnson (880-8576).


EVENTS

Poetry and Writing Events.

Under the sponsorship of the family of Mrs. Eleanor Pearlstein Weinbaum, the department regularly brings poets and writers of national repute to the Lamar campus for readings.

Also with grants from the Provost’s office, the Department brings in guest writers and sponsors literary events.

Awards

Pulse Awards: The Eleanor Poetry Award, the Barnes Poetry Award, the deSchweinitz Poetry Award, the Pulse Fiction Award, the Rowe Critical Paper Award and the Rowe Poetry Award.

These awards are given annually in conjunction with publication in Pulse, the Lamar student publication for poetry and short fiction.

Scholarships

The Department annually awards a variety of scholarships in language, creative writing, literary scholarship, editing and academic performance.

HONOR SOCIETIES AND CLUBS

Sigma Tau Delta is the National Honor Society for English majors. Each fall, selected majors are invited to join this service organization. Information about the Gamma Nu Chapter is available from Dr. Sharon Joffe (880-8578).

Pi Delta Phi (French National Honor Society) information is available from Caitlin Duerler (880-8557).

Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish National Honor Society) information is available from Dr. Catalina Castillon (880-8580).

Le Cercle Français (French Circle) is a Lamar-community organization if you are interested in French culture. Sponsored by Caitlin Dueler, Maes 21 (880-8557), this organization gathers regularly to view French films, enjoy French wine and converse in French. 

Circulo Hispaño (Spanish Circle) is a Lamar-community organization that promotes cultural contact among Lamar students with Spanish speaking people of our community. For information about gatherings, contact Professor Norma Zarzosa (880-8593).
