Call for Entries

Lamar University is pleased to be hosting our sixth juried art exhibition for Lamar University alumni titled "After School Special". This exciting exhibition offers an opportunity for LU graduates from across the country and around the world to share their creative work at the Dishman Art Museum. The exhibition will consist of 5-7 artists, each of whom will be represented by the body of work they entered.

The Dishman opened its doors in 1983 as an Art Gallery. Located on the campus of Lamar University, it serves as a teaching facility by hosting new and innovative exhibitions by faculty, students, and nationally known artists. Renamed the Dishman Art Museum in 2003, it is a showplace that contributes significantly to the cultural opportunities of the region.

After School Special is open to any graduate or former student of Lamar University with any major. ALL MEDIA will be considered. Entrants must submit 5-7 images from a specific body of work; however, artists may submit up to two different applications.

Video artists may submit 1-2 entries and must supply the equipment necessary to show their videos during the exhibition. The Dishman does not provide video projectors. Video work should not exceed 5 minutes.

Sculpture should not exceed a 5' x 5' footprint and should not be higher than 7'. Entrants of sculpture may enter up to 4 works. Each work should also include specific instructions for assembly or display if necessary. If the work is wall mounted, the entrant must enter 5-7 images.

How to Submit Your Work

Entrants should complete the registration form using the "Submit Your Entries" link and include a short 150 word artist biography in .doc, .docx or .pdf format. Art work entry files must be .jpg or .png files, 72 DPI, maximum 1024 pixels wide or long. Videos may be submitted in .mp4, .wav, or .avi formats. Please supply specific information for each piece including the title of the work, year the work was made, size, medium of the finished work (painting, sculpture, pigment print, gelatin silver print, etching, video, etc.). The entry form will not accept more than 25MB of uploads.

Exhibition Dates

June 14 - August 3, 2024

The exhibition will consist of 5-7 artists, each of whom will be represented by the work that they entered.

Juror: Michael Kennaugh

Michael KennaughMichael Kennaugh (b. Casper, Wyoming, 1964) has spent most of his life in Texas and currently lives and works in Houston, Texas.  He received a B.F.A. degree in Studio Art from Lamar University (1986) and a M.F.A. degree in painting from the University of North Texas (1990). He also attended The American College of Switzerland in Leysin (1990) and was awarded an artist residency (1996) at the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center, Montauk, Long Island.  Kennaugh’s work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont; Houston Airport System, City of Houston; Lamar University, Beaumont; Tyler Museum of Art; and the Mobile Museum of Art, as well as private and corporate collections both national and international.  His work was on view as part of a three-person exhibition titled “Our Back Pages” at the Dishman Art Museum in 2023. He is represented by the Moody Gallery, Houston, Texas.

Entry Fee: FREE to all Lamar University Alumni.

Delivery and Return of Work: Selected artists are responsible for packing and paying for the shipping and transit insurance work to and from the Dishman Art Museum. Use sturdy, reusable packaging. Return shipping must be prepaid by the artist and enclosed with the artwork. Works may also be hand-delivered.

All work must arrive ready to install. If the work is not gallery-ready or does not exhibit good craftsmanship, it may be omitted from the exhibition. Work will be insured while on the gallery premises. All work must arrive at the Dishman Art Museum by June 3, 2024. Accepted work will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition. All work will be returned (or should be picked up) by August 16, 2024.

Publicity: Please note that if your artwork is selected, you will be asked to provide your image(s) again to the Dishman Art Museum in 300 dpi format (high resolution) along with a short statement and CV or bio for publicity purposes. Artists will always be given credit for their work.
