A Message From STAR Services

Posted: May 11, 2020

Hello from STAR (Student Tutoring And Retention) Services! College is an exciting journey and we provide guidance and academic support resources to assist students in achieving their academic, personal, and professional goals.

This spring our campus community has faced the challenge of transitioning from on campus services to remote services. I am excited to report that our STAR Services tutoring, academic coaching, peer and professional mentoring, and workshops have continued supporting student success through online initiatives. Since March, almost 300 students have been connected to tutoring and academic coaching and have completed over 400 contacts with one of our staff members!

We offer a variety of services at no additional cost and our main programs available to all Lamar University undergraduate students are:

  • The Academic Success Conference, a conference at the beginning of each semester that assists new and returning students in developing strategies, techniques, and relationships to thrive at LU through activities and breakout sessions.

I encourage you to further explore our services at lamar.edu/stars. Our services are also easily accessible through our website where students can submit request forms for tutoring and academic coaching appointments and faculty and staff can submit student referral forms and Success Ambassadors requests. Upon receiving requests or referrals, we contact students within forty-eight hours to schedule appointments.

We are proud of not only the variety of services we offer, but also the quality of the services we provide. Both LU Success and Tutoring Services have achieved College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Levels I and II Certification. This certification signifies that our programs were reviewed by peers in our field and have achieved high professional standards in training and skills for tutoring and mentoring.

Thank you to the amazing Lamar University campus for all of your referrals, support, and encouragement. We look forward to another amazing year of supporting student success!
