Lamar hosts Modern Languages Competition Feb. 16

2/8/2008

The Lamar University Department of English and Modern Languages and the Spanish Circle student organization will host Lamar’s annual Modern Languages Competition Saturday, Feb. 16. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the Setzer Student Center.

More than 160 students from across Southeast Texas have confirmed their participation, said Norma Zarzosa, instructor of Spanish and coordinator of the competition.

They will represent Barbers Hill, Beaumont Monsignor Kelly, Buna, Hamshire-Fannett, Lumberton, Nederland, Port Arthur Memorial, Spurger and Woodville high schools and Harmony Science Academy and Port Arthur Memorial Ninth-Grade campus.

Students will compete in the poetry/prose category during the morning. Other events include cultural displays, cultural art poster, one-act play, lyrical music and dance. Afternoon events will be open to the public.

The awards ceremony is expected to begin about 2:30 p.m., Zarzosa said.  The ceremony will include the announcement of scholarships to attend Lamar University.

“We want to encourage parents, families and the public to attend,” Zarazosa said.

Additional information is available from Zarzosa at (409) 880-8593, email nlzarzosa@my.lamar.edu, or Thomas Martinez, Spanish Circle public relations chair, (409) 722-6676.
