Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities offers preview day

1/29/2008
Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities

Lamar University’s unique dual-credit program for high school juniors and seniors will provide a glimpse into the possibilities for gifted and talented high school students at its spring preview day, Monday, March 3.

The residential honors program for exceptional students gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to complete their final two years of high school while they earn 60 or more hours of college credit. Students admitted into the academy are given a full-tuition scholarship for a normal 15-credit-hour course load and pursue university-level research opportunities.

The academy’s preview day begins with 8:30 a.m. registration in the University Reception Center, 8th floor of the Mary and John Gray Library.  The program continues through 1 p.m.  Highlights of the day include an overview of the academy experience, campus tours, parent/ student panels, financial aid information and more.

“The Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities is a unique dual- credit program in that it has a threefold focus on leadership through academic excellence, the humanities and community service,” said Mary Gagné, director of the academy.  “Many of our graduates continue their education at some of the most distinguished universities in the nation, and pursue careers in medicine, law, and education.”

Admission to TALH is competitive and enrollment is limited.  Specific requirements and more information on the program are available on the Web at www.texasacademy.org.  Parents and students interested in attending the preview day are encouraged to register to attend at www.texasacademy.org.

More information on the preview day, or the academy in general, is available by calling (409) 839-2995.
