Author Joyce King has donated $2,500 to Lamar University to provide scholarship assistance to students impacted by Hurricane Rita.

King’s books include “Forgotten Hurricane: Conversations with My Neighbors,” “Hate Crime: The Story of a Dragging in Jasper, Texas,” and “Growing Up Southern.”

King said she intends for her donation to serve as “seed money” for a scholarship honoring Jefferson County Sheriff G. Mitch Woods, who provided strong leadership in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita. She urged others to donate to Lamar University to help the scholarship fund grow.
