Kyle Sean McDonald Memorial Scholarship established

12/21/2007

The Kyle Sean McDonald Memorial Scholarship has been established to provide scholarship assistance for undergraduate students of all majors at Lamar University.

The scholarship was initiated by memorial donations from Sean’s friends and family, and the endowment was completed through a generous gift from Drs. Marilyn and George Mehaffy of Maryland, Sean’s mother and stepfather.

Kyle Sean McDonald was born in Houston in 1968 and grew up in Texas, New Mexico and California.  He graduated from Grossmont High School in El Cajon, Calif., attended Lamar University and was a longtime resident of Beaumont.  Before his death in April 2006, he had opened a business in Beaumont, AAA Movers, and worked as a welder for Chicago Bridge and Iron.  He will be remembered for his humor, honesty, and loyalty to family and friends.

The endowment in the Lamar University Foundation will generate funds for the scholarship.   The scholarship will be open to undergraduate students of any major who maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0, with preference given to students who have overcome adversity in life.  Recipients who maintain good academic standing may remain on the scholarship until graduation.

“This scholarship honors the memory of Sean and will help others realize their dream of a college degree,” said Janice Trammell, director of development and executive director of the Lamar University Foundation. “Because it is directed toward students who face challenges and who may not be academically strong, it complements the many scholarships managed by the Lamar University Foundation.   It will be a tremendous help for aspiring students who need a financial boost to achieve their dreams.”
