Richard Ashmore, adjunct instructor of geology at Lamar University and national award-winning photographer, will exhibit work in an invitation-only professional exhibition at the Buddy Holly Center Fine Arts Gallery in Lubbock starting this month.

Ashmore was invited to exhibit in the fifth biennial exhibition of Texas Works. His work will be on view Dec. 18 through Feb. 10, with an opening reception Jan. 4 and a closing reception and artists’ gallery talk Feb. 1.

“It’s always a great honor to be asked to show work with well-known artists in a professional exhibit,” said Ashmore, a self-taught photographer and doctoral student in biology at Texas Tech who received his bachelor degrees in geology and earth science from Lamar and his masters degree from Texas Tech.

A native of Orange, Ashmore began documentary photographic work in Big Bend National Park in 1995 while a Lamar geology research assistant.

The first formal exhibits of Ashmore’s work were in Lubbock in April 2006. Since then, he has had work included in 17 Texas exhibits in Lubbock, Nacogdoches and Orange, including two solo and four juried shows. Last year, six of his photographs were selected for Illuminance 2007, a national juried exhibit at the Buddy Holly Center, where he received a juror award for his photograph Javelina Draw–Black and White, 2005. He also has work archived and on display at Texas Tech University’s Southwest Collection and Lamar University’s Department of Earth and Space Sciences.

Ashmore will exhibit 22 photographs in Texas Works 2007-2008 of scenes taken throughout the southern and southwestern United States, including three from a Bridge City cemetery and two of Hurricane Rita’s aftermath. The photos are grouped into five themes: former societies, grief, geology, human-altered landscapes, Hurricane Rita and portraits.
