Lamar University marked Cultural Immersion Week 2009 from Oct. 26-30 with a series of fun-filled events to promote cultural diversity on campus. The goal of the event, hosted by the Office of Student Affairs, was to showcase the unique groups that comprise Lamar’s student body,
“Cultural Immersion Week is geared towards enhancing multicultural interactions among students, student organizations, and faculty,” said Ashley Spicer, coordinator of new student programs. “This year we decided to highlight the food, music and dances of different cultures.”
Throughout the week scores of students and cultural organizations gathered in Lamar’s Setzer Student Center to participate in various diverse programs.
The week began with a kick-off rally in the quad. Following the rally, a special event was held each day to educate students about the many diverse groups that compose Lamar’s student body.
One well-received event was Taste of Culture, a food exhibition allowing student organizations to showcase ethnic cuisines from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The student body had the opportunity to indulge in the delectable treats.
“We thought this would be a good idea to get students interested in different cultures, and since we are the Hispanic student organization, it’s a good way to also let them know a little bit about the Hispanic traditions,” said Hispanic Student Association member Carolina Ramirez.
The annual event is co-hosted by the Student Government Association.
