University closes as Hurricane Ike approaches Texas coast

Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology canceled classes for Thursday and Friday, Sept. 11-12, 2008, due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Ike on the Texas Coast.

Classes are to resume Monday, Sept. 15.

Lamar University physical plant staff were to report Thursday morning to complete hurricane preparation on the campus. The university emergency response team met at 9 a.m.

Lamar University students living in Cardinal Village and surrounding neighborhoods needing transportation to shelter should report to Cardinal Village Phase 1 no later than 10 a.m. to sign up. Cardinal Village residence halls will close at noon. Buses to shelter will depart at 2 p.m.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to monitor the lamar.edu and LIT.edu websites as well as local news media for additional information. The university will also use the Connect-ED system to distribute updates on the situation.
