LU MBA program announces prestigious scholarship recipient

5/8/2008

The Lamar University MBA program has announced Jiawei Guo as this year’s recipient of the William G. McGowan scholarship.  This scholarship is offered annually to senior undergraduates or second semester graduate students who will complete their MBA at Lamar University. The scholars must show strength in their academic performance, leadership qualities and community involvement. The recipient must be full-time student, majoring in business.

Guo is an accounting major from Beijing, China. After completing her undergraduate degree with a 4.0 grade point average, she began the Lamar MBA program in August 2007. “When I received notice that I had been named the William G. McGowan Scholar, I was overwhelmed with so many emotions it is almost impossible to describe,” Guo said. “I will continue to do my best, striving for my goals and working hard, just as Mr. McGowan would have done.” Guo is vice president of the Chinese Student Union and one of the founders of the Lamar University Chinese Club.

All scholarship applicants are required to submit two essays, one on the contributions of William G. McGowan to the business world in general and a second that clearly demonstrates the students’ potential and aspirations to use their academic knowledge in today’s business world.

This scholarship program is available to students at colleges or universities that offer accredited business programs.

The Lamar University MBA Program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, or AACSB. In just 16 months, students can earn their MBA through Lamar’s traditional MBA or cohort MBA programs.

This scholarship provides the funds necessary for students to have the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in business. McGowan founded the scholarship because he was accepted to Harvard’s school of business, but did not have funds to attend the prestigious business school.
