Bleed Red, Live Green campaign kicks off on Earth Day April 22

4/10/2008
Lamar University’s Bleed Red, Live Green campaign, a new initiative implemented by Cardinal Village staff to promote recycling within the on-campus housing community, launches April 22 in conjunction with Earth Day. Cardinal Village will host a kick-off party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Phase I that includes a DJ, free food and other giveaways.

“We wanted to raise the residents’ awareness about their impact not only on the environment but in their community here on campus. Then it hit us, what better day to do it on than on Earth Day since we are encouraging our staff and residents to live a little greener,” said Leah Falgout, assistant director of residence life.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of recycling totes that will be placed outside to dispose of paper, newspapers and plastic. Those who sign a recycling pledge to help keep Cardinal Village green will receive free organic T-shirts.

The program was organized by the Cardinal Village staff and assisted by Gulf Coast Recycling, supplier of the recycling totes.

Falgout said the housing community saw a need for this type of program after noticing just how much recyclable trash residents accumulate.

Recycling totes will be placed in Phase I throughout the summer and will be distributed to all residence halls in the fall.

Bleed Red, Live Green is intended to raise students’ awareness of the importance of recycling and the impact it can have on their community. For more information about the Bleed Red, Live Green campaign, contact Falgout at (409) 880-8718.
