Lamar Dance Company to present spring concert, auditions

3/28/2008

Lamar University’s Dance Company will present its 2008 spring faculty dance concert, at the University Theatre April 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m.

This program will feature new and original dance works from faculty choreographers Lou Arrington, Michelle Ozmun and Golden Wright and is suitable for all audiences.

Lou Arrington, Lamar dance faculty member and staple of the Beaumont dance community, has created several dances in the styles of ballet, jazz and tap. Her Spanish-style classical ballet work features soloist, Kristen Still, of Beaumont. Arrington also presents several high energy jazz dances and a contemporary tap dance in the evening’s concerts.

Visiting lecturer, Golden Wright, created a modern dance based on restricted and bound movement as influenced by costumes designed by Lamar Theatre associate professor Kelly Draper.

“It was an interesting choreographic journey to create movement when the dancers basically couldn’t move in certain ways. As a dancer and choreographer, I’m not used to placing such restrictions and limitations on my creative process. The costumes and their limitations really made me have to think and be even more creative,” said Wright.

Lamar University’s dance program will also conduct auditions for the fall semester on Saturday, April 5. Registration for auditions begins at 1 p.m. Auditions will consist of ballet and modern dance exercises and combinations. Prospective Lamar dance majors are required to audition for placement and need to call 880-7799 to reserve a space at auditions and for more information.

Tickets for the spring concert are $10 general admission, $5 for seniors and students, and may be purchased at the door.
