Lamar hosts 'A Celebration of Teaching' April 7

3/24/2008
Nearly 300 local junior high and high school students interested in becoming teachers will be on the Lamar University campus for A Celebration of Teaching April 7. The event’s theme is “Build a Better Tomorrow – Become a Teacher.”

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the John Gray Center Auditorium with a welcome session, introducing Lamar faculty and providing students with admissions and scholarship information about the university. Students will enjoy the remainder of the morning in breakout sessions as participants in workshops, titled “Teaching with Heart,” “Who Wants to Be a Teacher?” and “Teacher Toolkit,” presented by Lamar faculty.

After the breakout sessions, students will attend a catered luncheon at the University Reception Center on the eighth floor of the Mary & John Gray Library. During lunch, Jackie Simien, former KFDM news anchor and current public affairs coordinator for IEA-Inspire, Encourage, Achieve/Ben’s Kids, will speak about the importance of education and how it has positively affected her life. A Celebration of Teaching will come to a close as students have the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion with Lamar faculty and students.

The following schools are participating in A Celebration of Teaching: Bridge City High School, Hamshire-Fannett High School, Hardin-Jefferson High School, Kirbyville High School, Lumberton High School, Clifton J. Ozen Magnet High School, Spurger High School, Vidor High School, West Orange-Stark High School, Odom Academy Middle School, Vincent Middle School and C.O. Wilson Middle School.
