Research topic: Relationship between physical activity and smoking among Lamar University students
Synopsis of Work: As a McNair Scholar, Robinson worked with his mentor, Dr. Julio Morales, to develop a questionnaire to investigate tobacco usage and physical activity habits among Lamar University students. Robinson administered the questionnaire, which also gathered demographic information, to 100 full-time students in summer 2007, and worked with Morales to analyze results in the fall. Robinson also researched similar studies previously performed at other universities. The study, which is related to Morales’ ongoing research on physical activity among college students, found that students who engage in moderate physical activity are less likely to smoke.
Dates of Research: March to October 2007
Publications/Presentations: McNair Scholars Symposium at Lamar University, November 2007.
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Julio Morales
Alfred Robinson: “It was definitely a learning experience. It sparked my interest as far as graduate school to do further research and work with a mentor there as well.”
