After being postponed last year due to COVID-19, Lamar University students, alumni, family and friends are welcome back to campus on Thursday, Nov. 11 through Saturday, Nov. 13 for the 2021 Homecoming and Cardinal Family Weekend.

Lance Taylor, a current graduate student in the Master of Science in Accounting Program who also earned his B.B.A in Finance and Accounting, has accepted a full-time job offer to join the Walmart Corporate Headquarters as Financial Analyst II.  This offer comes after Taylor successfully completed a highly coveted and competitive internship program with the company.

Taliah Belcher, senior accounting and finance major, has been awarded the 2021 Texas State University System Regents' Student Scholar Award, an honor that includes a commemorative medallion, a board resolution and a $5,000 credit toward educational expenses. Student scholars are formally recognized at the Board of Regents meeting held on Nov. 19 at Sam Houston State University.

The Center for First-Generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and The Suder Foundation, has awarded Lamar University a $500 grant in support of the institutions inaugural First-Generation Celebration.

The formal investiture of Jaime R. Taylor, Ph.D., as Lamar University’s 16th president will take place on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m. in the Montagne Center. The event coincides with Lamar University 2021 Homecoming celebration events. 

In an effort to highlight the success of women in STEM fields, LU Women in STEM is hosting a panel discussion where guest panelists from a variety of STEM fields will meet with aspiring female STEM professionals to share their perspectives and experiences from the industry.

Lamar University is pleased to announce the launch of the institution’s first alumni organization, the LU Black Alumni Network.

Lamar University’s Special Collections has been awarded a $1,000 Rescuing Texas History grant from the University of North Texas Libraries. The grant will help digitize, physically preserve, and provide public access to the special collection of LU alum and world-renowned mycologist, David Lewis ’72, ’78.

Dr. Liv Haselbach, chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, along with Paola Passalacqua, R. Patrick Bixler and John Swartz of University of Texas at Austin and Hamed Moftakhari  of University of Alabama , has received funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for a project titled “Understanding current and future coastal flood risk: How do local governance networks shape resilience efforts in response to perceived hazards?” 

Dr. Amber Adams ’15, instructor of nursing in the JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing, recently presented at the EN21 National Emergency Nursing Conference. The conference is hosted annually by the Emergency Nurses Association and gives nurses the opportunity to network and learn about current practice changes occurring at other facilities and organizations.

Through the creation of COVID-19 Care Bins, Dr. Chisholm’s vision gave the JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing an outlet to give back to local agencies, many of whom are colleagues and alumni of the JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing.

Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music presents the Fall Jazz Concert. The Lamar University Cardinal Jazz Orchestra will present its first concert of the academic semester on Thursday, October 14, in the Rothwell Recital Hall located on the campus of Lamar University. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Senior chemistry and biochemistry major, Menna Elsaka, and senior biology major, Krystal Le, are heading to Orlando, Fla. to present their research at the 56th National Collegiate Honors Council Annual Conference on Oct. 27.

For the fifth time, the LU Beta Alpha Psi chapter in the College of Business has been recognized internationally as a Superior Chapter for their outstanding performance during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Without fail, the LU College of Engineering has taken leaps and bounds to ensure that engineering graduates walk away with an invaluable college experience and the best return on investment. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week, LU is set to host “Southeast Texas Out of the Darkness: Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Walk” to support suicide prevention and encourage the Southeast Texas community to walk side-by-side in memory of those we’ve lost. 

The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music will host their Piano Festival on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9, in the Rothwell Performance Hall located on the campus of Lamar University. The Piano Festival will include a faculty recital by the Duo Korusa, master classes, ad a recital by guest artist Rodolfo Morales.

Join Troy Gray, Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown museum director, and special guests Judy Linsley and Ellen Rienstra, authors of the book "Giant Under the Hill," for an online question and answer discussion about the discovery of oil at Spindletop, Gladys City, and more.

Gary Martin, professor in the Educational Leadership Department at Lamar University, recently co-authored the 5th edition of the university text, School Leader Internship, which is being published by Routledge Publishers.

The Dishman Art Museum is currently presenting Julie Speed: East of the Sun and West of the Moon in exhibition through Nov. 13. This exhibition is organized by the El Paso Museum of Art and curated by Dr. Patrick Shaw Cable.

The Lamar University online Master of Public Health program has been ranked the No.6 most affordable program in the nation by EduRef.net. 

Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed 14 people to the Texas Health Services Authority Board of Directors and among them is Dr. Cynthia Stinson ’75, JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing associate professor and department chair.

Charlie Cooper, Founder & CEO of Americom Marketing, spoke to students on Sept. 28 as part of the college’s Executive in Residence Speaker Series. The series functions to enrich LU students’ learning experience by connecting them with business leaders whose roots started at the College of Business.
