While taking the course Social Media Campaigns this fall, 49 LU students earned the HubSpot Social Media Certificate, a professional social media strategy certificate.
HubSpot is a leading company in inbound, online and social media marketing and software development. The free certification program is popular among social media content managers and recognized in the industry.
Dr. Qingjiang Yao, associate professor of communication and media, combined course content with requirements for the certificate so students simultaneously gained the Social Media Campaigns’ content as well as earned the certificate.
The course was offered in an eight-week format. Students spent four weeks studying the HubSpot course videos and taking quizzes based on the videos. In the other three weeks, students read four-to-five required articles and seven-to-ten optional articles about how to post effectively on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and conduct a mini campaign on those three social media platforms, respectively. They also learned how to write reflective discussions to review the course content and posted readings. In the last week, students took the HubSpot final exam to earn the certificate and complete a brief social media campaign plan for a client of their choice using a template that Yao developed.
“Students in the course learned how to build an effective social media strategy, set up social listening and moderation, create social content, extend social reach, excel in digital advertising, measure ROI and more,” said Dr. Qingjiang Yao, . “The course for the certificate covered the fundamental but cutting-edge perspectives of social media marketing. The course videos have high-profile social media marketing professionals talking about their current practices. The certificate is widely recognized in the industry and is a nice addition to students’ resume.”
Matt Gonzales, a senior earning a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree took the course to gain industry-recognized credentials that he could apply practically to make money.
“This course set my future endeavors in motion and helped me decide on a specific and focused direction for my future in marketing,” said Gonzales. “I am already using my certification to help businesses get noticed on social media. After freelancing, helping a couple of businesses improve their presence on social media, I decided to create my own agency, The Department of Social Media Services. Upon graduating this month, I will be doing social media marketing services full time as well as promoting my own product brand across as many social media sites as possible. I will also be working to add new certifications to my resume.”
According to Glassdoor, the average pay of a social media manger is $35,000-$72,000. With a certificate from HubSpot, LU students are poised for entry-level positions in the field of social media.
Social Media Campaigns inclusive of the HubSpot certification will be offered again in spring 2021.
