Events will commemorate legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Lamar University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion will hold in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a candlelight service on Tuesday, January 17, a panel discussion on Thursday, January 19, and a day of service on Saturday, January 21.  Each event is free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, January 17, students, employees and the community are invited to join in a “Unity and Peace” Candlelight Service in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Landes Auditorium at the Galloway Business Building (Room 101).  Delvin Seawright, assistant professor of accounting and business law, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, a “Unity and Peace Panel Discussion: Is the Dream Still Alive?” will bring panel members together to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and how his call sacrifices for a just society, impacted the past, impact the present and remain relevant for the future. The 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. discussion will be held in Landes Auditorium.

Gwinyai Muzorewa, assistant professor of history and a specialist in African and African-American history, will serve as panel moderator. Panelists will be Natalie Tindall, chair of the Department of Communication, Terry Mena, associate vice president for the Office of Student Engagement and dean of students, and Aaron Lavergne, president of the Student Government Association, a Mirabeau Scholar and senior majoring in mechanical engineering.

A Day of Service in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s Legacy is planned for Saturday, January 21. Students, faculty, staff and community members will have the opportunity to participate in service projects at locations such as the Southeast Texas Food Bank, Lamar Community Garden, South Park Community Garden, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and for Habitat for Humanity Home Construction Site. Check in for participants will be at the lobby of McDonald Gym at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
