Market Basket Charitable Foundation Scholarship established
The Lamar University Foundation has announced an endowed scholarship has been established for students of all majors and all class levels. The Market Basket Charitable Foundation Scholarship will provide funding for outstanding students to further their studies at Lamar.
“We are excited about this scholarship,” said Kristie Young, Lamar associate director for development. “Market Basket and the Thompson family have supported students through scholarships for many years. This is just one more way they are assisting our students gain an education.”
Initially, a scholarship program began in 1977 with a group of independent grocers known as the Sabine Neches Food Industry Association. Market Basket and the Thompson family played a major role in establishing and administering the program until the organization began to dwindle because independent grocers started going out of business. The Market Basket Charitable Foundation was established and continues to support local students with college scholarships. The foundation hosts an annual golf tournament with the intent to provide four scholarships each year to assist in enhancing the quality of education in the communities they serve.
“The Thompson family places a high emphasis on education in furthering the career goals of students in our area,” said Tom Soper, vice president of human resources for Market Basket. “Lamar is the university that serves the same community we serve so it’s a natural for us to support those students.”
