Cheerleading Team prepares for UCA Nationals
The Lamar University Cheerleading Team is preparing to compete in the 2013 UCA College
Nationals held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida on Jan. 18.
The community can catch a glimpse of the Lamar Cheerleading Team’s UCA Nationals routine at the LU versus Texas A&M Corpus Christi basketball game at the Montagne Center Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. Interested parties are also invited to attend the Lamar Cheerleading Team practice Jan. 16 to watch the routine, ask questions and discuss spring tryouts.
Kristyn Henderson, Lamar cheer and mascot coordinator, said the team learned the nationals routine during the fall semester while simultaneously cheering for football and basketball, and carrying a full course load. Team members practice 12 hours a week in addition to all of their games and public appearances.
“This is only the third year Lamar has had a cheerleading team, and only the second year it has been co-ed,” Henderson said. “Our main goal for competition this year is to make it to finals. We will be competing against 24 other teams from around the county, all of which have had their cheerleading programs in place for decades.”
Upon returning from the UCA Nationals, the team will hold monthly cheer clinics leading up to spring tryouts.
Tryouts have been set for May 18-19 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the McDonald Gym. There is a $25 tryout fee. For more information, contact Henderson at (409) 880-7241.
