Department of Art Open House
The Department of Art at Lamar University will host an open house and portfolio review for all students interested in pursuing careers in art, art education, photography or graphic design this Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Art Building.
This program is open to all levels, and graduating seniors are especially encouraged to attend. High school students are invited to bring their portfolios for review by Lamar’s faculty artists. Students will have the unique opportunity to have works viewed and assessed by a professor in their area of interest, as well as to learn more about career opportunities in the field. Current Lamar art students will provide guided studio tours and studio demonstrations throughout the day.
Portfolios should consist of eight to 10 works of art demonstrating skill in a variety of media. Emphasis should be on completed works in the area of interest, along with works that reflect a demonstrated drawing skill. The portfolio should be physically brought in. Two-dimensional work must be presented flat with straight edges and spray-fixed as needed. Though not required, it is recommended that pieces be presented on mat board. Three-dimensional pieces may be presented on a CD formatted to open on both PC and Mac platforms. Each image should be no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches and no smaller than 150 DPI. A clear image list should accompany the CD.
Lamar’s Department of Art offers a number of programs of study, including the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in either Studio Art or Graphic Design, and the Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design or Studio Art leading to all levels teacher certification. Students can major in the following areas: graphic design, photography, art education, drawing, painting, sculpture, fibers or printmaking. In addition to personalized instruction and small class size, our students enjoy diverse extracurricular activities and pre-professional opportunities aimed at building their professional portfolios.
The Lamar University Department of Art offers our students a number of merit-based scholarships. Many of these scholarships are made available to incoming freshmen demonstrating marked ability in their visual art skills. The Lamar University Department of Art scholarship committee organized the open house and portfolio review. For questions or more information, please contact the Department of Art at (409) 880-8141.
