LU fans ‘Get Your Red On’ before home opener
To celebrate the third season of the return of collegiate football to Southeast Texas, Lamar University is reminding fans to “Get Your Red On” – leading up to the home opener at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in Provost Umphrey Stadium.
“Everyone who has come out for our home games experienced a spectacular showing of Cardinal spirit as fans got their red on – big time. The result was, literally, a ‘sea of red’ on both sides of the stadium and on the field,” said Juan Zabala, associate vice president for university advancement.
“We are ready for an encore as Saturday night lights return to Lamar University,” Zabala said.
Cardinal spirit will be more visible than ever during the 2012 season when hundreds of signs and banners will adorn the campus to help students participate in Get Your Red On and to welcome Cardinal Fans to campus on home-game Saturdays. Focal points will include large banners on the Mary and John Gray Library and Setzer Student Center.
Here are the kickoff times for home games this season:
* 7 p.m. Sept. 8, vs. Prairie View A&M
* 7 p.m. Sept. 22, vs. Langston
* 3 p.m. Sept. 29, vs. Southeastern Louisiana
* 7 p.m. Oct. 13 for Homecoming, vs. McMurry
* 3 p.m. Oct. 27, vs. Sam Houston State
* 3 p.m. Nov. 10, vs Nicholls State.
The schedule will open on the road against Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m. Sept. 1. The Cardinals also will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, to play the University of Hawaii Sept. 15 and on to Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., Oct. 6; Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark., Oct. 20; Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches Nov. 3; and McNeese State in Lake Charles, Nov. 17.
Lamar encourages individuals, organizations and businesses to display Lamar colors during weekends when the Cardinals host home games. Zabala challenged individuals and groups to “wear your Lamar University gear, put on your reddest red and show everyone your Cardinal spirit . . . Get your red on.”
Lamar is asking businesses and organizations to decorate – inside and outside – with Lamar University merchandise, logos and signs – “whatever it takes to show your Cardinal pride,” Zabala said.
LU merchandise is available at more than a dozen locations throughout Southeast Texas. Visit www.lamar.edu/alumni for a list of those locations.
