LU introduces mobile recruiting center, Cardinal Express
Lamar University now has a mobile recruiting center, the Cardinal Express, to take resources for prospective students on the road. The Cardinal Express name for this Mobile GO Center was announced Wednesday at an event on campus.
The Cardinal Express is a 42-foot gooseneck trailer wrapped with images showcasing the opportunities available for students at Lamar University. Inside, the center includes 16 laptop computers with Internet access via satellite to allow students to fill out applications for admission and financial aid and to complete career exploration exercises.
The Cardinal Express was introduced Wednesday with an event in the parking lot of the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center. During the event, students from Austin Middle School in Beaumont completed a career exploration program in the center, and the new name was announced.
Staff members in Lamar University’s Office of Recruitment chose Cardinal Express as the name after a contest via e-mail and Facebook. More than 80 entries were submitted. Cardinal Express was the overwhelming favorite, submitted by more than 20 people. The first person to suggest Cardinal Express as the name during the contest was Crystel Conley, executive assistant to the senior associate vice president for finance. Conley received an LU gift basket for her winning entry.
The Cardinal Express, which was obtained with a grant from the Texas Pioneer Foundation, will be available for activities at area high schools as well as parades, tailgating, college fairs and community events.
