Lamar University to host 2012 Brooks Conference April 19
The Lamar University Jack Brooks Chair in Government and Public Service will host the 2012 Brooks Conference Thursday, April 19, in the Montagne Center. “Civic Engagement for Political Participation and Public Service” will be the conference theme.
Former state Senator Carl Parker of the Parker Law Firm will be the keynote speaker for a luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. Other guest speakers include Beaumont Mayor Becky Ames and Orange City Manager Shawn Oubre.
The conference will bring Lamar University faculty members and students together with nonprofit, civic and government leaders who are being invited to attend, said James Vanderleeuw, Jack Brooks Chair at Lamar University and conference director.
The conference and the chair honor longtime U.S. Rep. Jack Brooks, a Beaumont Democrat who served in Congress more than 40 years.
Activities will begin with registration at 11:30 a.m. After lunch, the conference will feature three panels: panel on presidential primaries at 1 p.m., on political parties at 2 p.m. and on health care policy at 3 p.m.
Ames will speak at 4 p.m. during a meeting at which the national political science honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha, will induct new members. Oubre will speak at a master of public administration mixer that begins at 5 p.m.
