LU signs 23 students to new Co-ed Cheerleading Team
Lamar University signed 23 students Wednesday (May 18) as members of the university’s new Co-ed Cheerleading Team.
With the return of football in fall 2010, Lamar announced its first group of Cardinal cheerleaders in 21 years. Like that ensemble, the Co-ed Cheerleading Team will cheer and perform at all home football and basketball games and other campus and community events.
Members of the team are Parys Boutte, Karen Lovell, Ronald Nicklas and Havord Trusty of Beaumont; Samantha Briggs and Brittany James, Bridge City; Brooks Levingston, Fannett; Megan Ogden, LaBelle; Whitney Poe, Destini Ray, Chelsea Thibodeaux and Hailey Young, Lumberton; Kelsi Kolb, Nederland; Meagan Silva, New Caney; Erica Trosclair, Orange; Ron DeJohn, Port Arthur; Alisha Broussard and Cori Spencer, Port Neches; Alycia Ulrich, Schulenburg; Ellen Byars and Brittany Colvin, Silsbee; Wade Hendrix, Sour Lake; and Cesiley Cloteaux, Vidor.
The Co-ed Cheerleading Team will perform under the direction of Kristyn Henderson, cheer and mascot coordinator and a Lamar alumna. The team will join the Big Red mascot for various on- and off-campus activities. The team is the first in more than a decade to include both male and female students.
“I am very excited about the upcoming year, and the decision to turn the team into co-ed from all-girl is going to help us build a stronger program,” Henderson said.
