Spirit Team ‘Showdown’ will showcase Cardinal spirit
The Lamar University Spirit Team is thinking big as it prepares for its sixth annual “Showdown” Cheer and Dance Clinic Saturday, Feb. 12, on the Lamar campus. Besides gaining new skills and polishing their talents, participants will take the spotlight at the Cardinal men’s basketball game.
Clinic activities for kindergarten pupils through eighth-graders will be in McDonald Gym, in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center.
The “Showdown” will divide students by grades, according to this schedule: kindergarteners through fifth-graders, registration at 9 a.m. and clinic 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; fifth- through eighth graders, registration at 11 a.m. and clinic 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“This will be a huge fund-raiser, offering a cheer and dance clinic,” said Brixey Blankenship, head coach of the Lamar Dance Team. What’s more, participants will learn two routines – and display their newly honed talents when they perform at the men’s basketball game that night in the Montagne Center.”
There’s even more good news: “Showdown” participants will be admitted to the game without charge with their clinic T-shirts. Their parents may call the Montagne Center box office, (409) 880-1715, to purchase game tickets.
“Our clinic ‘stars’ will have the opportunity for photos and autographs with the Big Red mascot and Spirit Team members – so be sure and bring your cameras,” Blankenship said.
The Cardinals will take on the Colonels of Nicholls State in the 7:05 p.m. Montagne Center match-up.
Cost of the “Showdown” Cheer and Dance clinic is $35, payable by cash, check or money order to the Lamar University Spirit Team. Parents or guardians must accompany their children at the clinic and at the game.
