Enrique J. Venta Memorial Scholarship in Accounting established at LU
A new endowed scholarship at Lamar University honors Enrique J. Venta, father of Enrique “Henry” R. Venta, dean of the College of Business at Lamar.
Venta, and the Venta family, established the Enrique J. Venta Memorial Scholarship in Accounting as a tribute to his late father’s dedication to the accounting profession.
The elder Venta was born in Havana, Cuba, and earned a degree in accounting from the University of Havana in 1952. Because of the Cuban revolution, Venta chose to bring his wife and three children to the United States and went on to have a successful career as a comptroller and accountant, forming Alvarez, Venta and Associates and Enrique J. Venta Accounting. His son, Miguel, is also an accountant, and his daughter, Teresita, who worked in the family’s accounting business, took over completely after Venta’s death in 2006.
“My father knew education was the key to success,” said Lamar’s Venta, “And although accounting was very important to him, it was his other legacy that we most want to pay tribute to—his life of service. He cherished the concept of education, and he realized that some students need help to attain that. This scholarship seemed like an appropriate way to honor both his professional and personal legacies.”
The scholarship, open to undergraduate accounting majors, will be awarded beginning in 2011.
“My father would have been very proud that we are helping someone else to climb the educational ladder,” said Venta.
