SMART –Support and Mentoring to Advance Research and Teaching

The SMART program developed out of Lamar University's highly successful Quality Enhancement Plan, and has been adapted to meet the needs of incoming faculty.

This year-long program will help you to adjust to working at LU, prepare you for ongoing success in the classroom and in the tenure process, and find your place in a lively and productive community of teacher-scholars dedicated to innovation and best practices.

The program is voluntary, compensated and open to all faculty in their first three years at Lamar.

The SMART program provides:

  • mentoring by experienced teachers and scholars
  • support in establishing and implementing a research agenda in preparation for tenure review
  • guidance in navigating Lamar University resources, procedures, and performance evaluations
  • training in a variety of innovative teaching strategies and course designs
  • guidance in using assessment to improve student learning
  • the opportunity to develop collegial and supportive relationships across campus
