Programs

Lamar Alive!

Lamar Alive! sponsors a variety of programs and co-curricular activities that enhance the social, educational, and cultural experiences of students at Lamar. Located in the Setzer Student Center, Lamar Alive! seeks active and interested volunteers to plan such programs as lectures, talent shows, academic bowls, classical and current film festivals, dances, concerts, holiday parties for children, comic appearances, coffehouse entertainment, tours and trips, cultural festivals and other celebrations.

Performing Arts

Students with a love of the arts can enjoy music, theatre, and dance on campus. The student talent maintains active programs of plays, musicals, operas, concerts, and dance. Any student may audition. The Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Bands, and Lamar Chamber Orchestra each give campus concerts and perform at many community events, frequenting Beaumont's historical Julie Rogers Theatre. Numerous small groups of brass, woodwind, and string ensembles provide wonderful opportunities for student musicians. The A Cappella Choir and the Grand Choir sing both on and off campus. The Cardinal Singers are a popular attraction with audiences statewide. Opera Theatre presents an opera production every year. The Lamar Dance Company features jazz, modern dance, ballet, and Afro-Caribbean dance, presenting a concert during each long semester. Dance company members also perform in musical theatrical productions and in smaller groups. Musicals and plays are produced each semester and aspiring actors often perform with dinner theater and children's theater groups.

Recreational Sports

If you're not involved in varsity athletics, intramurals offer the opportunity to unleash that competitive spirit, whether on the racquetball court or on the field with the men's or women's soccer club. We have facilities for sports lovers. They include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a weightroom, two practice fields, racquetball courts, the Ty Terrell Track and Field, a golf practice range, tennis courts, the Vincent-Beck baseball stadium, Cardinal Stadium, and the 10,000-seat Montagne Center sports arena. Leisure time may find you at the Fitness Center or taking advantage of the Rec Aerobics program. The Weight Room houses a complete line of free weights, universal machines, aerobic cycles and stair climbers. For our students' convenience, sports equipment is available to be checked out for overnight and weekend excursions or club activities. Click here to visit their web site.

LamarWork$

The LamarWork$ program is a student employment program assisting Lamar students in locating part-time jobs, internship opportunities and on-campus jobs. Many students gain valuable work experience through part-time employment while in school. Workshops are offered each semester on topics such as interviewing techniques, resume writing and job search strategies. Career Counselor work with students to answer questions and critique resumes or cover letters.

A new computer lab offers resume writing software, keyboard speed practice and testing, and internet access for online job and company research. Students are also offered computerized career development services including vocational assessment, that can assists students in choosing majors and careers. Seniors are encouraged to participate in the on-campus recruiting program which provides opportunities to interview with employers seeking to hire students after graduation.
