Incoming Freshman
A possible exemption is available if you have completed college-level coursework in mathematics, English, philosophy, political science, or history (including dual-credit or AP tests). GET MORE INFO »

If you do not have college-level course(s) related to mathematics, reading, or writing then you may qualify for an exemption based upon test scores.

There is a 5 year expiration on all of the following exams.

Test scores

SAT (Taken prior to March 2016)

Critical Reading
+ Math
SAT Overall Critical Reading Math
1070+ 500+ 500+


* To calculate the Overall score, the writing section is excluded.  Add your total for the Critical Reading + Math sections.

Determining exemption based upon the SAT (prior to March 2016) exam is a two step process; you must first meet the Overall minimum.  If you earn the minimum Overall score, then you must also meet the minimum for each section to be exempt in that area.  You are NOT exempt by earning a 500 in each section, both sections added together must be at least 1070.  

        Example:   1080 Overall              

                            590 Critical Reading     

                            490 Math                  

This student would be exempt in reading and writing, but would need to take the math portion of the TSI Assessment. 

ACT

ACT Composite English Math
23+ 19+ 19+


Determining exemption based upon the ACT exam is a two step process; you must first meet the Composite minimum.  If you earn the minimum Composite score, then you must also meet the minimum for each section to be exempt in that area.  You are NOT exempt by earning a 19 in each section, the Composite must be at least 23.  

        Example:    24 Composite              

                            17 English     

                            22 Math      

This student would be exempt in math, but would need to take both the reading and writing portions of the TSI Assessment.  

Redesigned SAT (Taken March 2016 and after)

Redesigned SAT Reading and Writing Math
480+ 530+

This exam does not require students to first earn a minimum Overall score.  Earning the minimum score in each section will exempt students from taking the TSI Assessment in that area. 

STAAR

STARR English III Algebra II
Level II (4000) Level II (4000)

This exam does not require students to first earn a minimum Overall score.  Earning the minimum score in each section will exempt students from taking the TSI Assessment in that area. 

11th Grade TAKS

11th Grade TAKS ENLA and Writing Sample Math
2200+ AND 3+ 2200+

This exam does not require students to first earn a minimum Overall score.  Earning the minimum score in each section will exempt students from taking the TSI Assessment in that area.

Your Next Steps

  1. If you are exempt based upon test scores, then your TSI status is automatically updated and you do not need to take the TSI Assessment.
  2. Check your Self-Service Banner account to ensure that we have received and evaluated any transcripts.

  3. If you have any transcripts, once you see them listed, check your holds and address any that would prevent your advising session.

    2. Common holds that will be addressed during your advising session (you do not need these lifted prior to making an appointment):

      • TSI (If you are an LU Online Accelerated Program student, contact the UAC to adjust this hold prior to your advising session).

      • Pre-Professional Advising
      • State Drops Remaining
