High School Graduates

To fulfill the Unconditional Admission requirements, applicants must have graduated from an accredited high school and have taken SAT and ACT entrance examinations. Equivalency diplomas granted on the basis of GED scores are not accepted unconditionally. Prospective students who do not fulfill the unconditional requirements should peruse the guidelines for Individual Approval Admissions and Exceptions discussed below.

Unconditional Admission
Students who meet all of the following prerequisites, will qualify for unconditional admission.
1. High school diploma from an accredited high school.
2. Successful completion of 14 high school units in college preparatory courses including
- 4 units in college preparatory English courses (English I, II, III, and IV or English IV up through academic or higher level English courses).
- 3 units of college preparatory mathematics courses (Algebra I, II, Geometry, or higher level mathematics courses).
- 2 units of laboratory science courses (any 2 units from Physical Science, Biology I, II, Chemistry I, II, Physics, I, II, or Geology).
- 2 1/2 units of social science courses (1 unit of U.S. History, 1/2 units of U.S. Government, 1 unit of World History Studies, or 1 unit of World Geography Studies).
- 2 1/2 units of approved college preparatory course electives. 2 units of a foreign language are recommended.
3. Submitted SAT or ACT scores. Students must graduate in the top 1/2 of their high school class or achieve a minimum composite score on the SAT/ACT as indicated below.

Individual Approval Admission
Applicants who fail to meet the requirements for Unconditional Admission may be considered on an individual approval basis. A limited number of applicants may be admitted under this provision.
Students admitted as Individual Approvals are subject to the following provisions:
1. Mandatory in-person advisement and registration.
2. No more than 6 credit hours in a summer term and no more than 14 credit hours, including the study skills class, in a fall or spring term (except that such students may, with the approval of their advisor, additionally enroll in a one credit hour course).
3. Intensive Texas Success Initiative (TSI) remediation. Developmental and/or collegiate level coursework in each area of under preparedness as identified by one of the TSI approved assessment instruments must be included in the class schedule each semester until TSI complete in all areas.
In order to be released from the Individual Approval Program a student must:
1. Have completed nine earned collegiate-level hours.
2. Have earned a grade of “C” or higher in one college level English course or one college level mathematics course at or above the level of college algebra.
3. Have earned a grade of “C” or higher in a study skills class (PEDG 1271 or PSYC 2270).
4. Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.000 or above.
Students who do not satisfactorily complete the provisions of Individual Approval admission within one calendar year are subject to suspension for one long semester. Exceptions
1. Any applicant over 25 years of age will be granted admission with proof of high school graduation and presentation of SAT or ACT scores.
2. A non-high school graduate who is at least 18 years of age may apply for admission under Individual Approval provisions. Such applicants must
- Demonstrate the aptitude and seriousness of purpose to successfully pursue a college course of study
- Furnish evidence of preparation substantially equivalent to that required of other applicants. Evidence must include a GED, SAT or ACT scores and transcripts of previous academic work.
3. Graduates of home schools or non-accredited schools must submit transcripts of high school work and SAT or ACT scores. Applications will be reviewed in accordance with transcript course requirements as listed in Admissions Requirement I.A.2 and must satisfy minimum SAT or ACT score requirements. Applicants who fail to meet the requirements of Unconditional Admission may be considered on an Individual Approval basis.
Additional Requirements
In addition to the general admission standards, the Lamar University pre-professional and professional programs may have additional requirements and more rigorous standards commensuate with the demands of the various programs.
THEA Testing Requirements
All students enrolling at Lamar University must have reading, writing and math skills assessed. While THEA testing is not a requirement for admission to the University, all students MUST have THEA scores (or proof of exemption) on file with the University prior to academic advisement and registration for classes.
