Mike Ferguson, Jr., Lamar University’s Vice President for Finance and Operations, is a native Texan and attended Sam Houston State University, earning his B.B.A. with a major in accounting in 1962. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1971 and completed the Governor’s Executive Development Program at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, University of Texas in 1988.
Mr. Ferguson began his career as an auditor with the State Auditor’s office in Austin and served more than twenty years of service. The last thirteen years, he served as an Audit Manager over audits of institutions of higher education. In 1986, he left the state auditors and served as Vice President of Finance and Administration at University of North Texas Health Sciences Center for nine years.
After retiring from state service, Mr. Ferguson and his wife served with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board for one year performing audits of all mission activity in the Middle East and North Africa.
Upon returning to the state, The Texas State University System recruited him to be Interim Vice President for Finance and Operations at Lamar University. In 1999, he was selected by Dr. James Simmons, Lamar University President, to remain as the Vice President for Finance and Operations. Mr. Ferguson is responsible for providing leadership, oversight and management of all financial services, human resources, facilities management and operations, information technologies, campus police, risk management and safety, internal services, and the mail center.
Mr. Ferguson is a primary member of The Texas Association of State Senior College University Business Officers and served as President of the association in 1994-1995. He is also a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
