Barry W. Johnson, Lamar University’s Vice President for Student Affairs, graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1965 and a Master of Arts degree in 1966. He completed additional graduate study at the University of North Texas. In 1986, Johnson received the Doctor of Education degree from the University of Houston. In 1991, he received the Diploma of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Music from The University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Johnson was a member of Class XX of the Governor’s Executive Development Program at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, University of Texas. While pursuing graduate work, he served as a graduate assistant in music theory at Sam Houston State University and as a part time trumpet instructor at the University of North Texas.
Prior to coming to Lamar University, Johnson held teaching positions at Texarkana College, Highland Park High School, Dallas, Texas, Hillsboro High School, Hillsboro, Texas, and Woodville High School, Woodville, Texas. Johnson’s Woodville High School Band was named the Texas Music Educator’s Class AAA Honor Band in 1981. At that time, he received the Texas Music Educator’s Leadership and Achievement Award.
Johnson came to Lamar University in 1983 as Assistant Director of Bands and Director of the Marching Band. Prior to his present appointment, Johnson has held positions of Professor of Music, Director of Bands, and Chair of the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance. As Vice President for Student Affairs, Johnson is responsible for University Health Center, Career & Testing Center, Recreational Sports, University Housing, Setzer Student Center, Greek Life, University Press, University Bookstore, University Food Service, New Student Programs, International Retention and Shuttle Service, Student Services and Judicial Affairs.
Johnson’s professional service has included being band clinician and music adjudicator for schools and universities in both the United States and Canada. His community service has included serving as the President of the Board of Directors of Wildwood Property Owner’s Association for many years. Most recently, Johnson served as educational consultant and School Bond Committee Chairman for the Warren Texas, Independent School District.
Johnson holds membership in Phi Beta Mu, National Band Fraternity, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, lifetime membership in the College Band Director’s National Association, and honorary memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.
