After 13 years of exemplary service to the University, President James Simmons has announced that he is stepping down. Hence, the Texas State University System announces a nationwide search to recruit a successor who can continue the University’s positive momentum.
Lamar University, home to more than 15,000 students and located on an attractive campus of 270 acres in Beaumont, Texas, offers over 100 programs of study leading to bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees and is classified as a Doctoral Research University. Students are taught and supported by over 1200 faculty and staff, and the University has a robust on-line program. Lamar participates in Division I sports within the Southland Conference and plays in modern sports facilities. With over 75,000 alumni and many community and regional supporters, Lamar has raised over $100 million in the current Capital Campaign.
Lamar’s President has broad responsibility for the leadership and management of the University and its resources and guides the University in developing its mission, goals, and strategic plans. The President oversees the recruitment, promotion and retention of all faculty and staff. The President reports to the Chancellor of the Texas State University System, which is composed of eight different campuses across Texas and is the oldest and third largest system in Texas.
Lamar University seeks a President who has deep respect for the University’s mission and goals and who appreciates the University’s important social and economic role in the region, state and nation. The President will have an earned doctorate and be an experienced university leader with a record of success in fundraising and relationship building. The President will have unquestioned integrity, a good sense of humor, a passion for educating students, and a record of building and maintaining an atmosphere of transparency and collegiality. The President will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills combined with a creative, entrepreneurial spirit, and strong business acumen. The President will have extensive budgeting and management experience in higher education and a record of achievement in infusing diversity within a university. Finally, the President will be able to develop and implement a shared vision for Lamar’s future that is ambitious and achievable.
