Collegiate 100 of Lamar University win big at C100 Leadership and Career Institute Conference

Lamar University’s Collegiate 100 Chapter was named the National Winners of the 2023 C100 Leadership and Career Institute Conference at the 100 Black Men of America’s 37th Annual Conference in Las Vegas on June 19th.

LU's C100 at 2023 ConferenceThe conference brings hundreds of mentors and community leaders together to focus on education, empowerment, and creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders.

“This conference allowed for expanding skills, sharing best practices, networking, and learning how to positively impact youth and your community,” Dr. Kathryn Washington, advisor of LU’s Collegiate 100, said.

The organization competed against Morehouse and Texas Southern Universities in front of top corporate executives.

“I was honored to be asked to participate in the panel training session, ‘Role of the Collegiate 100 Advisor to the Success of a Collegiate 100 Chapter',” Washington said. “The icing on the cake was when C100 of LU was chosen against the top three to compete and participate in the final competition against Morehouse and Texas Southern Universities.”

The group project the chapter presented was to create a viable Collegiate 100 Conference with events and a breakout session. They created a flyer, timeline, agenda, a booklet with a detailed conference agenda, an application that the students could engage with themselves, and community service projects that could be accomplished during the conference, such as serving at a food bank or park cleanup.

“One of the judges commented that with a few tweaks, Lamar University’s C100 Chapter could use the plan they created for a conference right now,” said Washington. “I was extremely proud of them for rising to the challenge and winning against such stiff competition with a new set of students. Lamar University is truly producing the next generation of leaders, and I am fortunate to help and have a front-row seat to witness it.”
